84-33 Woodhaven Blvd: Lewis of Woodhaven Robbie + Jeff Lewis in front of their store at 84-33 Woodhaven Blvd in 1983. A Woodhaven institution for 65 years, Lewis’ of Woodhaven, closed its doors shortly after Christmas in 2003. Lewis’ served as a general store and meeting place for serious shoppers, mothers with strollers and teens. Families in Woodhaven and across Queens grew up with the quaint store under the train tracks, which was once described as “the kind of five and dime lots of people remember from their childhood—worn wooden floorboards, aisles of humble junk that appeal to people on limited budgets. Founded in 1938 by Julie Lewis, his son Robert and nephew Jeff spent 30 years of their professional lives in the store. At the time of its closing, Maria Thomson, executive director of the Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation, said the store was a slice of Americana that could not be replaced. It’s so unique in that it’s our own general store, like in a cowboy town. You can go in there and get whatever you want. It would be a shame if we lose that as well as the Lewis family.” Photo Credit: Kris Connor Golsong - Redux by Scott
