889 soldiers brainstorm in Nigeria on maritime security A total of 889 military personnel are converging in the country to participate in the ‘African Winds’ training operation of maritime security. The Chief of Training and Operations at the Nigerian Army Headquarters, rear admiral Babalola Ogunjimi, said during a joint press briefing at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, on Sunday that 150 men of the Nigerian Armed Forces would be participating at the crucial conference on maritime security. Ogunjimi said that 71 other military personnel from countries covered by the programme such as Morrocco, Senegal, Ghana. Benin, Togo and Cameroun would take part in the exercise. The Naval Chief of Training and Operations added that a total of 668 troops on board a Netherlands warship, HMNLS ROTHERDAM, expected to support the training programme and various exercises lined up for the 14-day summit, were also among the participants of the event. He said that the ship, HMNLS ROTHERDAM, “which carries a total of 668 troops, four helicopters and six speed boats called landing craft utility and landing craft vehicle personnel is expected to be in Lagos from 15-18 October and in Calabar from October 21-24, 2013.” Ogunjimi said that the participating Nigerian troops were drawn from the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, the Navy’s Special Boat Service, the Western Naval Command and the Hydrographer of the Navy. He said that the Nigerian Air Force Special Operations Group, the 81 Air Maritime Group and the Naval Air Station would provide air support for the exercises under the summit.
