8th January 1972: Peter Gerald Woods, 29-year-old Catholic - TopicsExpress

8th January 1972: Peter Gerald Woods, 29-year-old Catholic civilian, married with 2 children and a publican was shot as he returned to his home with the nights taking from the pub he was part-owner of. He was part-owner of the Gibraltar Bar in York Street, a family owned business. Three men broke through the front door of the pub with a hatchet and shot Mr Woods in front of his wife and escaped in a stolen car. It was reported in the Irish Times that Mr Woods had no connection to any political organisation and the motive for Mr Woods killing was robbery. It was told at the inquest that Mr Woods showed no resistance. Mrs Woods said they were counting the evenings takings when the gunmen pushed their way into the room. She said 1 of them had a silver revolver and shouted wheres the money? She said there was a blue flash and her husband fell with a gunshot wound to the cheek. She said the man shouted: you better get me the money or you are next. She said the man pushed her husband over and searched his pockets. She said she then saw the money on the table and gave it to 1 of the men who then said: we have got the money, Seamus. Come on. The men escaped with £500.00. Mr Wood’s father owned a hotel in Bangor and said that his son had been in the family business since he was 16-years-old and eventually became part owner. Reliable loyalist sources said the UVF was responsible for the killing of Mr Woods. LEST WE FORGET!
