8th June 2013 So near yet so far Texts: Matthew 26:23 Memory Verse: ‘And He answered and said, he that dippeth his hands with me in the dish, the same shall betray me’ [Matthew 26:23] Devotional thought: The fact that we sleep in church does not make us righteous. How near are you to God? Devotion Message Hello dearly beloved. We give glory to the God of all other gods for the gift of wisdom and knowledge. Thank God for His light that shines in us. If going to church is the measure of Christianity, then it is not different from any other religion, hence being close to men of God or knowing the doctrines of each church is not what God is calling us to but a cordial relationship. Let me start with a question. Do you know Jesus? Like His question many years ago, what do you take Him for? Some take God for a ruler that gives lists of rules and place punishments for its breaking, and is always looking out for us to default so that He can punish us. Some take Him for somebody that needs labourers to work in His vineyard or a pauper that could just be bought with some money and have to be contented with that whether we obey His command or not. But like Jesus said to the woman at the well, we need to know whom we serve else it would only amount to religion. Jesus told the woman that they do not know what they serve but Israelites do for Salvation belongs to Israel. Do you know whom you serve? Do you know God? And if you do, who is He to you? Judas was so close to the Lord yet he knew Him not, what an irony? Though he was not closest of the disciples yet one of the closest. Before the final betrayal he had been a betrayer for having been with the Lord for some time, he should have been saved you suppose? But the Lord will never force anybody. He placed before us life and death and He beseeched us to choose life but if we refused to will He force us? Many people are close to great men of God but they never knew the God of the man of God. You might have been a foundation member of an ancient church and people see you as a good man but have you met the Lord of the church. You are so near to God physically but spiritually you are miles away. People are holding you in high regards but you are not what we feel you are, the time to know the Lord is now. It is dangerous for you not to enter relationship today. You might be a worker in the Church, an elder and even a Pastor that is not guarantee that you know Christ. If you are near then do the Galatians 5:22 test and then you can know how close you really are. There are also some of us that are even born again and Spirit-filled but the nearness to the Holy Spirit is bringing too much contempt. The Holy Spirit is a teacher and is always interested in our growth until we reach the fullness of Christ but we by contempt are not growing. Judas was so familiar with Christ that he could not get Salvation from Him, so also we are too familiar with the Holy Spirit that simple instruction from Him we don’t follow. We might be so near to blessing but yet so far. Peace be upon your soul. PRAYER Lord, bring us to your real knowledge. Amen.
