9/11/2001, I will never forget that day. It was a gorgeous all blue sky day. At the time, I was working for the NYPD. My rank was a 2nd Grade Detective. I was working in a unit within the NYPD, Warrants. That beautiful morning I was in route from Bronx Warrants to lower manhattan, with a prisoner, returning him on a warrant at 100 Centre Street Court House. When the first plane hit. I could not drive south of a Canal Street. So I parked the van, took the handcuffs off the prisoner, and we walked like gentlemen to the court house at 100 Centre Street. As we walked, I could see the huge hole in the side of the building from the first plane hit. Crowds gathered around. I remember saying how are they going to repair that hole. Never thinking the building would come down. The prisoner and I reached court and all the court officers had surrounded the court house. I was in plain clothes so I ID myself to the court officer and said is court opened? His response was its opened, but its closed. I could not use the police radio, and I could not use my cell phones, because of the volume of people on the cell phones. So I turned to the prisoner, I wrote down all the info that he would need to go back to court. I told him this warrant will stay active until he clears it up. He thanked me, shook my hand like a gentleman, and looked me right in the eyes and said Detective, I promise you I will keep my word and returned to court. He then hugged me and we God Blessed each other. While my partner and I walked back to our vehicle, I saw crowds gathered around parked cars with the doors wide open listening to 1010 wins. We where still in the area of 100 Centre Street, when the 1st Tower came down. As I walked north, I heard this loud noise coming from behind me. When I turned around, it was a heard of people coming towards my way. Just like the Godzilla movie, the people would run. What heard was the screams coming from all walks of life. My partner and I ran into a doorway just to get out of the way. After the heard of people past, I looked down the street, and what laid in the street were shoes, silk scarves, briefcases, and pocket books. Then I knew why they were running. Right around corners this white/gray dense cloud consumed buildings, people cars, trucks, everything in its path. As we continued to walk, a businessman said to me, officer look, (pointing to the first building hit) the top floor, the fire is a bright orange. I looked and a stared, and then I said to the business man, its going to collapse he said you think so? I said yes. No sooner did I say that I could hear the floors falling on top of each other. It sounded like a freight train. People were crying all over the place. My partner and I hugged each other right there. We finally made it back to the Bronx. The next day, I was reassigned to the City of New York Morgue. I was working at the morgue from 9-12-01 to 12-31-01, for almost 4 months. I remember while at the morgue, they brought in a human leg. When DNA was done on the leg, we had DNA on file from the families who brought in underwear, toothbrushes, combs, and hairbrushes of loved ones that were missing. Along with the underwear and hairbrushes, the families provided a photo of their loved ones. We have a hit on the DNA on the human leg, and we matched it to what the families provided to us. There was a photo of handsome young man in his late 20s. He had blues, dark hair, and a beautiful smile. I just cried for him and his family. Thats one of hundreds of stories. God Bless us ALL. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
