9/17/2014 - Bosley Pharmacy sale to Walgreens ends an era - WBCH 100-1 FM Radio The sale of Bosley pharmacy to Walgreens leaves a tear in the fabric of downtown Hastings. Owner David Jasperse confirmed Wednesday that the pharmacy he and his wife Emily have owned since 1984, has been sold to Walgreens. The last day of business for the pharmacy is Sunday, Sept, 21. After Sunday, those calling the pharmacy will have their call automatically redirected to Walgreens. Jasperse and Pharmacist Mike Smith, who has worked alongside Jasperse on South Jefferson Street for 38 years, will go to work for Walgreens on Monday; Smith permanently, and Jasperse for at least a couple of months. Most of his employees are going to work at Walgreens, too. Jasperse said he is not sure what he will do with the store; I plan to keep it open, Ive got some ideas Im kicking around; but nothing set yet. What ever it is will be a business that someone else can run. So if I want to, I can come in one day and not the next, he said. There will be sales of the store merchandise for a couple of months, then, I dont know. Jasperse has a long and deep involvement in the Hastings community. Besides running the popular pharmacy and store, he has over the years, devoted much time to civic projects, promoting the city and serving its residents. He has served on numerous boards, committees and commissions, is a 4th ward Hastings councilman and sits on the Hastings Planning Commission, the Joint Planning Alliance and the Joint Planning Commission. The pharmacy has been a presence in Hastings since 1857, the second drug store to open in the city. In May of 1970, James Bosley of Ionia purchased the business, hiring Jasperse as the manager. In April 1984, Dave and Emily Jasperse purchased the store. The Medbug, which brought prescription delivery to Hastings area residents, was added in 2004. In 2011, Jasperse was one of five finalists for the 2011 Ken Wurster Community Leadership Award at the annual Cardinal Health Retail Business Conference in Las Vegas. The award recognized pharmacists who showed commitment to serving their customers and epitomized the role of pharmacists who took responsibility for the wellness of their communities. Dave Jasperse is an absolutely wonderful person; a huge asset to the City of Hastings for many, many years, said City Manager Jeff Mansfield. Mansfield came to Hastings in 1992 and Jasperse was already on the council. Dave was a critical part of city council and city planning; many, if not most of the good things that happened in the city, are related to Dave. He defined the vision for this community; he has phenomenal vision, able to see the underlying issues. Mansfield added that Jasperse has always been very cautious about keeping his business and civic life separate. A Hastings Rotarian, Jasperse was awarded the Red Rose Award, the highest honor the civic club can give, and was also awarded the Liberty Bell, an award given by the Barry County Bar Association to a person, group or organization for showing its commitment to the community. He just has given so much to the community, Mansfield said. Jean Gallup
