9.23 sunflower medicine this morning the sky even thicker with smoke, we all feel oppressed, concerned, coughing on the way to school then after drop-off i pull over to gather myself, turning into the parking lot of the college of ayurveda, where a patch of sunflowers practically knocks on my windshield to say hello, come visit us, we have a message for you. so i look up and over to see tall zinnias beyond which of course beckon me in, along with the promise of two shades of cosmos and a kind of smoky sunlight filtering through the ever vivacious magenta, orange and blazing gold, along the overgrown path i discovered a healing herb garden with dong quai and ashwaganda, and the sunflowers that were talking so loud saying it’s really okay people, it really is, we’re on it. sometime mid-afternoon a strong wind blew through and within minutes the sky was all clear and blue again, the heavy smoke vanishing, or moving off to torment and/or bless some other small town to the northeast, which was equally bizarre, and left us with more questions, but the sunflowers, they just keep shining, confidently growing, fading, drying, their eternal cycle unbothered by the temporary local air quality, the fire season, as if they know how to transmute the worst of it into the best, transforming grief and fear into beauty, as if that’s what they live for, that’s how they thrive
