9/25/2013 Wednesday on Lotan A few days ago two Tibetan young ladies, Tsering and Tenzin, from New Delhi, India, became my neighbors. My house is right across the path from where the female volunteers are housed so I get to meet fascinating young women from all over the world all the time. These ladies are working with the cows and do earn a salary. They get a bit more than the volunteers stipend for their efforts but unlike the volunteers, they like me, a renter, have to pay to eat in the dining hall. That doesn’t bother them because they prefer to eat their own cooking and frankly I can see why as tonight they gave me a plate of their delicious and very spicy rice dinner. I think my palate got very lucky getting them as neighbors. Alhough I had a Tibetan dinner at 6 pm I also ate some holiday dinner tonight at 8 pm in the dining hall. The place was jammed with tourists and visitors. As usual, I was one of the first at the dessert table for the delicious homemade cakes. But two dinners in two hours dampened my appetite for sweets considerably. Today I learned something new about the Eco programs offered on Lotan from my friend Josh, one of the directors of the program. The “Green Apprentice” program is a seven week program and comprises the first seven weeks of the “Living Roots” program which is a four month program. Completion of the Living Roots program will result in college credit. From what I can see, those involved in these programs are thoroughly enjoying their experience even though most of the time they are outside working in the Arava heat. It can’t be easy. No work tomorrow and so the pub will no doubt be busy tonight. Too bad I don’t have laundry to do tomorrow morning as most of the kibbutz will be sleeping in. Chag sameach to everyone and laila tov. לילה טוב שש
