9/26 - Growing up as a young boy in Louisiana, we ate a lot of leftovers. A pot of green beans for a family of 4 might have lasted 3 or 4 days in our house (that is eating them at every dinner meal). Ive heard someone say that their beans taste better have several days of sitting - ours did not. :) My family was spoiled in Brasil - we had fresh everything - meat, bread, fruit, cheese, etc.. It was so healthy, tasty, and relatively inexpensive. Im thinking because of that experience, we choose not to eat a lot of leftovers - maybe some cheeseburger soup (yum!), chicken and dumplings, desserts, and a few other things, but not much. Our last year in Mexico, I was very sick with ulcerative colitis. I would go out in the town and villages where we lived and give my very best to the Mexicans and indigenous groups, but when I came home - my family always seemed to get my leftovers. A lot of my irritability came as I was taking high doses of prednisone to combat the spasms going on inside my large intestine. I did not sleep at night, I had trouble eating pretty much anything that was sold in our town, and my joints and body were in constant pain. If you are familiar with the old Incredible Hulk television show from the late 1970s to the early 80s, my family would probably say they saw the green me and not the mild mannered doctor. :) Praying, studying Gods Word, and seeking godly counsel helped me realize the good I was trying to do for an indigenous people group, was being done in my own power (I really thought that I was the last hope for our people group), and at the cost of my wife and children. Godly advice that I needed to hear, came from a seminary friend and pastor, Charles Hodges. He reminded me that my relationship with my wife, Pamela Weaver was a covenant between her, me, and God. My work as a missionary, was a calling - and yes, though it was an important calling, he pointed outa COVENANT is bigger than a CALLING. May we always be careful not to give our families our leftovers. As Christ followers, may our life mission not supersede where God is CURRENTLY directing our lives!
