9-8 - Feast of the Nativity of Mary Wis 9:13-18; Ps 90:3-6, 12-17; Lk 14:25-33 Even though we celebrate the Scriptures of Sunday, we remember that today is the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. We pray through the intercession of Mary and her parents, Saints Anne and Joachim, for a comprehensive respect for life and for true family values. Sometimes, that means putting Christ ahead of having a new family of our own and ahead of the families we were born into. The following of Christ always means carrying the cross, in going against the grain of our personal whims and wishes, our wishie-washiness, in being counter-cultural, going against the trends (as Pope Francis challenged our youth in Brazil) when we are in the midst of so many societal fads, fashions, peer pressures and the ridicule of what we believe to be good, beautiful and true. We pray from Psalm 90: From every age Lord, you have been our Refuge. usccb.org/bible/readings/090813.cfm
