€9.90 album pick @ firebox.fi/store Saille - Ritu (digipack) https://youtube/watch?v=YuwMjt6A6QI Such a band are Belgium’s Saille, whose second album Ritu is, without qualification, one of the most masterful pieces of symphonic black metal I’ve heard in a long time. If you want reference points, it’s names like Limbonic Art, Arcturus and Emperor that come to my mind first, but those are just that – frames of reference, not direct comparisons, as Saille’s vision is emphatically their own. Their sound is rich and layered, a shifting, shimmering northern-lights curtain of melody upheld by sterling musicianship all across the board. A superbly clear mix allows the guitars to soar and dart, agile as hawks, above the backdrop of mainman Dries Gaerdelen’s smooth symphonic keyboards; the slower parts of the songs are clear, measured and melodic, while the fast segments have an exhilarating stormy sweep. The music is in turn done full justice by a ranged and powerful vocal performance from Dennie Grondelaers, with lyrics that cover everything from death cult rituals to the tales of HP Lovecraft, literate and literary in equal measure. Even the extra instrumentation – violin, cello, cornet, trombone, and more – is all contributed by guest musicians with real instruments rather than added with synths. There’s nothing about this album that hasn’t been done in- depth, with great thought and effort.
