9 January 2015 DEVOTIONAL BIBLE STUDY The Lord has given us His Word in order for us to know with certainty what life with Him is in reality. And with our world so far from God with endless mixed ideas of Who He is, and what is His Truth in all matters. We MUST do a responsible study of the Bible in order to learn God’s perspective of life – His Truth! 2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. The Lord Wants Us To Know Him Throughout the Bible there are many passages that reveal to us that the Lord wants us to know Him. And not just know that He exists, but to know enough about Him that we will be drawn to Him, and rely on Him and ultimately learn to love Him with all of our being (Deuteronomy 6:5). That we get to love the Lord so much requires that we know Him more than just with casual acquaintance through some reading and hearing some parts of the Bible taught. Deuteronomy 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. The Lord not only wants us to know what His Word reveals about Him, but that we individually know Him through our personal walk (life) with Him. Psalms 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. i.e. Experience what the Bible reveals about God in your own life with Him. In the beginning of Solomons reign, David challenges his son with the enormous responsibility he is about to undertake of being king of Israel. Rightfully David addresses Solomons personal walk with the Lord. And the first thing on the list is knowing God. David, the man after Gods own heart, knows what is important to the Lord and is able to get to the point of what their God required - that we know Him and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind. That is what the Lord is after! David was certainly a “spiritually minded” man! Jeremiah 9:23-24 23 Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: 24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD. The Lord addresses that which people value the most – ‘wisdom, might (strength), and riches’. The Lords council is that we glory in that which is the most valuable of all to glory in – “understanding” and “knowing” Him! (The following is based on Mark Cambron’s, “Bible Doctrines”.) THEOLOGY The word “theology” comes from the Greek word theos, meaning God. Thus, theology is the doctrine of God. To begin the study of the many Bible doctrines we must begin with the Source of all things - God! We must begin with God — there is no one, nothing, before Him. The first things we shall study are: I. THE NAMES AND TITLES OF GOD In this study we will have a look at the next names of God … E. Eloistic Combinations. As there are the Jehovistic combinations, so are there the Eloistic combinations. 1. El Elyon — “Most High God.” “Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God [El Elyon]” (Genesis 14:18). Here in the King James Version the name is translated “most high God.” Elyon means highest; with El it means the most high God. See also Deuteronomy 32:8; Daniel 4:34, 35. 2. El Olam —“Everlasting God.” “Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting [El Olam] God” (Genesis 21:33). Yes, God is the “Everlasting God” — “the God of All Ages.” He had no beginning and He will have no end. “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” (Psalms 90:2) 3. El Shaddai — “Almighty God.” This is first found in Genesis 17:1: “When Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God [El Shaddai]; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” “El” means the Strong One. Shaddai means ‘Almighty, most powerful’ (BDB Dictionary). Together the two words mean ‘the strong One Who is most powerful’ - Almighty. And this makes perfect sense seeing that before creation there was only GOD. And literally everything in the entire universe was created by Him. And so it is easy to appreciate that the LORD is Almighty over all that He spoke into existence (Genesis 1).
