9 am the pager makes a racket. Barn Fire, full of hay. Yay. NOT REALLY. Anyone who knows anything about fighting fire, barn fires arent really so much fun, even the ones not full of hay. Its never a put wet stuff on the hot stuff and be done situation, mostly more of a fire marathon. A Hay barn is about the worst. Its a double marathon, cause that stuff is so hard to get all of the hot out of. It smolders and smolders...and is LOTS of work, to turn and spray and dig burning hay out of the building. I worked for the first 3 hours of it, but as I said, its alot of WORK. Not the exciting kind either. Smoldering boringness for a photographer. After 3 hours..I have taken every photo possible pretty much. More turning. more burning. more spraying water on the smoldering hay. I was hungry, so was my hard working mini. So we left. feeling guilty, cause I know my fire guy was still working, and hadnt even had breakfast. I cant go take just him food, and I surely couldnt feed 7 fire departments fire crews. Salvation Army had arrived with some apples, bananas, and granola and Gatorade...they would survive. 5 hours later I can only imagine how unpleasant life was for my hero. He eats like clock work. He never skips a meal, and when he does, hes NOT a friendly bear....Hes now missed Breakfast AND Lunch. and I am sure an apple wont even cut it at this point. 6 hours into the marathon I was discussing the fire with my boss, and my concern about the guys working so long without a meal, and its now dinner time nearly...and they were still working. she was all over it. By hour 6 and a half, Wells County-Voice went and bought pizza for all of the guys away from home all day...fighting a persistent hay fire, and surely starved by now. They took it to the fire scene, and dropped it off to them. I can relax now, stop worrying about my husband gnawing the leg off of one of those cows out there. Pretty sure I work for the best company eva.
