914s TAKE NOTE: A lesson I learned many years ago...... Well before the cel phone days, on a remote SNJ forest road, alone, 1 AM, 60 mph...BAM....the drivers side CV joint adjacent to the trans became unbolted, smacked the starter and broke it off with a piece of the trans (I had recently rebuilt the CV joints). Spent 2 hours on the ground with a flashlight, found some bolts, reattached the CV joint. Pushed it to start and drive it home. Next day, pulled and cleaned the trans. I had a machine shop TIG (Heli-Arc) weld the broken piece on the trans. Mounted it back on the engine, attached a new starter, safety wired all CV joint bolts with aircraft pliers. Works perfectly. MORAL OF THIS STORY: Safety wire ALL bolts/nuts on the rear swing arms, CV joints and the front brake mounting bolts. Any questions?
