#95: California Dreamer by Wolf Parade Wolf Parade went on indefinite hiatus in 2011, with most of the band split between different bands now. While together, they produced three albums; Apologies to the Queen Mary, At Mount Zoomer & Expo 86. Wolf Parade’s music was distinguishable through its squeaky voiced front man, its heavy, kit breaking drum work and it’s fearless guitar work which was never afraid to go to weird places. California Dreamer sounds like something directly out of acid trip, it has a trance like feel to it which washes over you. Forcing you to surrender to it’s odd spell. And like a lot of songs I like, it’s about the end of a relationship, primarily from the perspective of two musicians, one who’s clearly left for bigger and better things. The singer’s perspective is that of trying to move on, but is always reminded of the person which is best personified by the repetition of the chorus “I think I might have heard you on the radio, but the radio waves are like snow”. It perfectly puts you where the singer is, stuck in a city of ice and snow while someone he knew once is somewhere warm and new. Melancholy and haunting, it never ceases to make me wish for a Wolf Parade Reunion.
