#96 Ive been mixing it up a little bit over on a quiz site which promised to tell me what kind of parent I am. (Yes, I know what kind of parent I am but Im addicted to Facebook quizzes.) The last question asked what my reaction would be in the event one of my children joined the military. My honest reaction wasnt an option and so I choose to share it in the comments. (No, I wouldnt lock them in the basement. Id take away the car keys. And then Id start a revolution.) Needless to say, my comment has provoked a small firestorm of responses, mostly from people who are offended that Im offended that we have come as a culture to believe that its okay to waste something as valuable as a human being in armed conflicts that are basically excuses for one segment of society to syphon off the resources of every other segment. What I think are the most pathetic are the people with family in the military, or who, Goddess forbid, are serving themselves. Dont they understand that its people like me, who see war as a very last option, who are the ones most likely to keep them alive? I guess not. A few days ago, a post on my sisters newsfeed caught my eye. It was a quote from True Blood, and I guess because it was accompanied by a photograph of a dishy Nordic vampire type, I paid attention. But the reason I paid attention was because it was about war... and it captured exactly what I believe to be wrong with our view of war, as a culture... and probably explains why, on some level I could never get into True Blood. War is not about getting something, it said, War is about finding something youre willing to die for. That may not be the exact quote, but you get the idea. My reaction to that was ...Wow, what a bunch of frigging bullshit. And how beautifully, ironically accurate that it gets spoken by a vampire, of all things... a blood-sucking inhuman entity that feeds off living people. (For example, can anyone say... Monsanto? Haliburton?) Are you paying attention, children? The emperor really ISNT wearing any clothes.
