9th of Av (Tisha be Av) - ט׳ באב The Romans made a siege around Jerusalem to invade it. No goods could come in and no one could go out. This went on for years. Food became so scarce that Jewish mothers would eat the flesh of their dead children because everyone was so hungry. Eventually the roman were able to get through the gates of Jerusalem and burn down our Bet Hamikdash. They chained whatever Jews were left and sold or kept them as slaves. We have been in exile since. This is the longest and last exile as promised in the Torah. Its the longest because the reason why we deserved to lose the Bet Hamikdash was that we were not nice to each other. Once Moshiach comes there will be no future exile. Until then we gave to do Tshuva and love each other unconditionally. Today is the day the Bet Hamikdash was burning. It continued to burn until 1:00 if the day following the fast so we dont eat meat or get haircuts until after 1:00 pm on Tuesday.
