A -SWACHHA DARJEELING - अस्वछ दार्जीलिंग Guest Editorial: by Upendra While PMO India Narendra Modi is Promoting Swachh Bharat, people in Darjeeling seem to be moving towards the opposite direction. As much as we all love Darjeeling, lets admit it - Darjeeling is one of the MOST CROWDED POLLUTED and the FILTHIEST mountain towns in the world. Believe it or not our population density 12490 people per square kilometer. Imagine in each square kilometer there are 12490 of us living. No other mountain town in the world is as populated as Darjeeling - By comparison, Shimla which comes the closest to Darjeeling in terms of their demography has a population density of merely 8181 people per square kilometer and Gangtok has a population density of 5675 and Shimla has 5536. But the main problem is not that we are OVER-CROWDED, the main problem is that we live like PIGS. Sorry if this news sounded a bit too harsh, but what else can explain the filth surrounding the town we live in and claim to love? Cant we take a little pride and ownership and take care of our beloved town? and the entire hills? Yesterday, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha the leading party which is in power in Darjeeling and is a constituent of BJP led NDA, celebrated their 8th Foundation Day. And this is the condition in which they left the heart of Darjeeling - CHOWRASTA in.. what is ironic is that only the day before GJM Chief had dedicated this very Open Air Theater to the public. Is this due to the lack of Civic Sense amongst our people? or is this due to the lack of education? or is it due to the lack of basic decency amongst us? As an apology to the people of Darjeeling for leaving behind the their mess, and to educate their cadres on the need for being conscious about US keeping our land clean ... we request the GJM leadership to kindly get their cadres to dedicated 1 day to clean Darjeeling. Also those who are reading this, please join hands to keep our Darjeeling clean and green... if we do not take care of our hills, NO ONE ELSE WILL.
