A 36-YEAR-OLD Quarry Owner of Valencia, charged with shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to police and gun-related matters was refused bail by a Sangre Grande magistrate before whom he appeared and was remanded in prison. Devon “GT” Coxell of St Albans Road , Valencia, appeared before magistrate Michelle Maharajh-Brown in the Sangre Grande First Court, charged with shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to police officers, possession of illegal firearm and ammunition, possession of a firearm to endanger life and possession of ammunition to endanger life. The charges were laid by ASP Dale Ablack of Eastern Division. Before Maharajh-Browne read the charges to Coxell she reminded him that he would not be called upon to plead since the matters were laid indictably. Sgt Nicholas Ramdeen, Sangre Grande First Court Prosecutor told the court on October 6, Cpl Nicholas Vialva, PCs Darren Francis Ashiki Charles and Keron Nanan responded to Information received about illegal quarrying. The policemen kept surveillance for a truck loaded with material. They saw the truck coming and came on the road and stopped the truck. The driver stopped a short distance away from the police officers, and began firing at the lawmen. The police took cover and returned fire when the driver was shot on his hand and the gun fell. the shooting ceased. The police then approached the vehicle and saw the man slumped on the seat in a blood- soaked jersey. He was rushed to the Sangre Grande District Hospital where he was treated for his wounds and warded. He was discharged from hospital on Monday, and was taken by police to the Sangre Grande Police Station. ASP Ablack continued inquiries which led him to slap the Valencia man with five charges which included; shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to police officers, possession of illegal firearm and ammunition, possession of firearm to endanger life and possession of ammunition to endanger life. Coxell attended court with a bandage on his arm and hopped all the way to the Sangre Grande First Court, escorted by PC Phillip. Maharajh-Browne refused Coxell bail, but advised him that he can apply to a Judge in Chamber for bail. Coxell was then remanded in custody by Maharajh-Browne. Coxell’s next court appearance will be on December 9, 2014.
