A 40-year-old man has died following a physical altercation in Wollongong. Around 5.15am today (Saturday 17 January 2015), police were called to a property on New Dapto Road, Wollongong, following reports two men were fighting. Upon arriving at the scene, police used OC spray to subdue one of the men – a 22-year-old from Mount Keira – before arresting him. Officers spoke to the other man involved in the altercation – a 40-year-old from Wollongong – as well as a 77-year-old man who had attempted to break up the fight. A short time later, the 40-year-old man collapsed at the scene. He was immediately treated by ambulance paramedics and taken to Wollongong Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. The 22-year-old man was taken back to Wollongong Police Station and has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on 3 March 2015.
