A 40-year-old man presents with a two-month history of lower back pain. During the last three weeks he has noticed that the pain radiates down the back of his left leg and that he has difficulty walking. On examination in the supine position, elevating his left leg aggravates his pain. There is diminished sensation on his left heel and along the lateral border of his left foot. The ankle jerk is absent on that side.
