A 55th Signal Combat Camera Soldier, assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, was killed by an explosion on 2 July 2013 at approximately 1030 local while deployed to Afghanistan. The 22-year-old SPC was photographically documenting the firing of a 60mm mortar when the mishap occurred. When the mortar fired, she was struck with shrapnel and severely wounded. The SPC was evacuated immediately to a medical center where she succumbed to her wounds. A Centralized Accident Investigation (CAI) team from the US Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center is investigating
