A BIG thank you to all the offered advise for our mini mare who we thought was having issues with foaling. We have had the vet out and have treated her for colic, tho we do not believe that is what she has. But better to be safe then sorry. We have since been told that she has Salmonella which makes much more sense and matches her symptoms perfectly. We have started treatment of Probiotics on the advise of the vet and Vitamin C and B on the advice of my friend who has been a wonderful help to me over this stressful week. Having a horse who is sick and not knowing for sure what is exactly wrong with them can be a daunting thing. There is not a lot we can do other then support her immune system and try and get her through until foaling time. We didnt know that horses can get salmonella or did we know that there is a vaccine for it. Our little girl has picked up quickly with probiotics and vitamin C and B and seems to be much more comfortable :D For those who dont know, as I didnt ~ Salmonella mainly affects mares in the weeks prior to foaling and signs are similar to colic or early labour. Signs can include pacing the fence, stretching out like going to urinate, laying down, stretching out and standing back up again, Diarrhoea, looking slow and lethargic, still eating and drinking but not to fussed on moving around to much.
