A BIRTHDAY MESSAGE FOR NELSON MANDELA (MADIBA) BY MY FRIEND AUTHOR : ZULEIKA A true icon of pure heart and soul Transcending love for both young and old His fight was about changing a trend Madiba, like Gandhi, a great among men Humanity is his middle name Fighting for a course seeking neither accolades nor fame Even as President he ruled with love Waving his brand of magic with a message from above I watched him grow as a little girl As he often stopped to touch a curl He toiled this land with blood and sweat But even now he has no regret A good Samaritan some might say A hero to worship heralding brighter days The country might be paved with gold But his Midas touch will never grow old The long road home was not easy at all Over potholes and crevices he stumbled but did not fall Held against his will he wanted to run Looking over his shoulder was anything but fun If only I could touch his hand Perhaps he’d cast a spell with his magic wand Touched by his aura I sink to my feet Taking in the essence of a man I have yet to meet Madiba! Madiba! The children scream It’s true he’s given them reason to dream With faltering steps he takes the stand As thousands cheer and clap their hands Alone at last he stops to rest Pausing he reflects what he’d achieved at best Uniting a nation free at last As memories come flooding of a bittersweet past A great, great man has come our way Oh what a way to celebrate and say Happy Birthday Now old and grey he lies in bed Staring beyond the horizon at a place ahead As angels appear like beams of light Whispering softly ‘it’s going to be alright’
