A BRIEF HISTORY OF GENERAL BUHARI. Muhammad Buhari, Muhammad also spelled Muhammadu (born Dec. 17, 1942, in Daura, Nigeria), Nigerian military leader and politician, who served as head of state (1984–85). Educated largely in Katsina, Buhari took military training in Kaduna. HE WAS INVOLVED IN THE MILITARY COUP THAT OUSTED YAKUBU GOWON (Remember, Gowon is a christian army general from middle belt) and ushered in General Murtala Rahmam Muhammed, a fellow northerwest muslim (pause and note, they shared same name Muhammed) in 1975 and he was appointed military governor of North Eastern state (now Borno state, the concrave of Boko haram) that same year. He was appointed federal commissioner for petroleum resources by Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo , who became military head of state when Gowon’s successor, Murtala Mohammed, was assassinated in 1976. By 1977 Buhari had become the military secretary at Supreme Military Headquarters, which was the seat of government. By September 1979 he had returned to regular army duties and commanded a division based in Kaduna. Although elected government had returned to Nigeria in 1979, dissatisfaction with what the military perceived as corrupt politicians led to another military coup on Dec. 31, 1983, and Buhari became the new head of state. In 1984, Buhari jailed Alex Ekwueme an Ibo man and Shagari vice president for 80 years in Kirikiri prison, while the head of the government (Shagari) was put in cosy house arrest in Ikoyi. Insurmountable economic problems plagued the Buhari regime as petroleum prices collapsed in the face of expanding foreign debt. Buhari instituted austerity measures that caused severe hardship to the average Nigerian. In addition, political corruption continued unabated, with politicians escaping to Western countries with millions of dollars in government money. In an effort to stop dissension, Buhari instituted restrictions on the press, political freedoms, and trade unionists. By August 1985 even the military had had enough of his unfavourable style of rulership, and Ibrahim Babangida took control of the government. Buhari was detained in Benin City but was released at the end of 1988 to attend 1989 Organisation of Islamic cooperation (OIC) meeting tagged Abuja declaration 1989 (purposely to Islamise Nigeria) In 2001, Buhari called for introduction of sharia law in christian dominated southern Nigeria. In 2003 Buhari asked muslims not to vote for a christian in an election he contested against the incumbent, Olusegun Obasanjo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), But he was defeated. Buhari ran again in 2007 but was defeated by the PDP’s candidate, Umaru Yar’Adua , Before 2011 election, Buhari threatened to soak bamboo and dog in blood if he lose. Buhari stood in the 2011 presidential election, which was praised for largely being transparent, free, and fair, but he again lost to the PDP’s candidate, incumbent Goodluck Jonathan. Buhari incited statement before 2011 general election culminated to the killing of innocent soutthern corper, northern Christians and non northern muslims and christians in the north by his supporters(Boko Haram) Also in 2011, Buhari promised to make Nigeria ungovernable for PGEJ. Today Nigeria is ungovernable. Fellow Nigerians, in view of the above, does Buhari deserve our votes in 2015. Please leave a comment.
