A BRIEF POST- MORTEM ON THE LIFE OF GENERAL SANI ABACHA ON HIS BIRTHDAY:27 Things You Need To Know. Many things both positive and negative have been said about General Sani Abacha but here are 27 things i think most people do not about the great General of Africa; Sani Abacha. 1, General Sanu Abacha was born on 20th September 1943. 2, He is a Kanuri originally from Borno State but was born and brought up in Kano State which he made home. 3, He married former Miss Maryam Jiddah also from Borno State in 1965 and they had Six boys and Three girls. The first child Ibrahim died in a plane crash in 1996. 4, The last of their children: Mustapha was born in Aso Rock in 1994 when Abacha and his wife were 50 and 47 years respectively. 5, He was known to be a man of few words, a strict disciplinarian, prudent manager, brave, loving husband and caring father. 6, Abacha joined the Army Im 1963 as a 2nd Lieutenant after attending The Nigerian Military Training College, Kaduna and Mons Officer Cadet, Aldershot, England. 7, He was the first and only Military Head of State who never skipped a rank to become a full-star general 8, He announced the coup that ended the government of President SHEHU Shagari on December 31,1983 and brought on General Muhammad Buhari 9, He also announced General Ibrahim Babangida as military president on August 27 1985 after General Buhari was overthrown. 10, He never held a nonmilitary appointment until he became the minister for defence in 1990 and Secretary of Defence in 1993 Interim government. 11, He became the Head of State on 17th November 1993. 12, Officially, he did not overthrow the head of the Interim government; Chief Ernest Shonekan. He assumed the position after Chief Shonekan resigned 13, The Constitutional conference he set up in Nigeria in 1995 brought about the six Geo political regions in the country. 14, The Nigerian 1999 constitution is a product of the Constitutional conference he set up. 15, He increased the derivation of Oil producing areas from 10% to 13% in 1995 16, He upgraded the National Commission for Women to a full fledged Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in 1995 17, He built the Nigerian National Assembly. 18, He increased fuel price just once in his Four and half years in office and set up the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) which intervened in many developmental programs in Nigeria. 19, He started the revival of the collapsed Nigerian rail system being completed by Goodluck Jonathan in 1995 20, He demonstrated that he was a responsible and responsive leader that cared about the security of depositors monies through the 1996 Failed Banks Tribunals. 21, He democratized the Local Government by conducting a peaceful and credible elections of Councilors and Chairmen. 22, He hosted Pope John Paul ll in 1997. 23, He was instrumental to the restoration of peace and democracy in Sierra Lone and Liberia after years of civil wars. 24, His wife built Nigerias number one public hospital: The National Hospital, Abuja within 10 months. 25, He died on June 8th 1998 leaving Nigeria, Africa and the world better than he met it. 26, He was honoured by president Goodluck Jonathan at the centurion anniversary of Nigeria for his contributions to the development of Nigeria in 2014 27, Most Nigerians are beginning to appreciate him many years after his death,having noticed the conspiracy of miseducation against him. Sleep on General Abacha,the brave never die,though they sleep in dust.
