A Bongo in Steam: LNER Thompson Class B1 4-6-0 No.61264 (BR number) - masquerading as No.61034 Chiru (the first 40 of this class were named after breeds of antelopes) - heads south to Pickering on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, earlier this month. The British Railways mid-1950s lined (striped) black livery of the loco, together with the BR Mark 1 coaches in blood and custard colours and BR standard brake van, all contribute to a pleasing period scene. This class of London & North Eastern Railway steam locomotive were intended for medium mixed traffic work, and designed designed by Edward Thompson, CME of the LNER, with 410 constructed between 1942 and 1952. The LNER B1s were equivalent to the GWR Hall Class and the LMS Stanier Black Five mixed-traffic locos. The enginemens nickname for this class was Bongos, after a type of African antelope. Two examples survive in preservation, the other being No.61306 Mayflower. More here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNER_Thompson_Class_B1 Thanks to Roy Seymour for this photo. -Phil
