As a concerned world citizen, I am anxious about Sunder’s well-being -- having seen evidence of abuse & inadequate care by his owner/mahout(s), eg. malnourishment & dehydration, along with scarring from repetitive daily beatings. Sunder is a sentient being who is denied everything that is natural to an elephant. This animal does not deserve to be treated so inhumanely. There are many concerned citizens around the world who want Sunder to go to a sanctuary where he will be safe and well cared for. The orders to move Sunder are clear. I humbly request that the Maharashtra Forest Department comply with the request of the Bombay High Court to release Sunder to a sanctuary. Until such time, we will continue to agitate for this elephants freedom and legal right. Thank you! Respectfully, Your Name City, State, Country _____________________________ #5 ACTION: E-MAIL BOMBAY HIGH COURT [Template Below] HIGH COURT OFFICIALS: 1} Shri. C. V. Avchat, Legal & Research E-mail: [email protected] -- E-MAIL TEMPLATE / HIGH COURT -- Members of the Bombay High Court & Whom Else It May Concern: The world continues to watch in desperate hopes that Sunder, the abused elephant in Warananagar, is finally freed from chains and sent to a sanctuary. As concerned citizens, we are grateful for the day that the High Court ruled in Sunders favor. Unfortunately Sunder has yet to be moved and we are asking that you please enforce your orders so Sunder does not have to suffer another day of abuse and confinement. We are aware that, per the Animal Welfare Protection Act 1972 & the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, Sunders owner(s) are in direct violation. We further request that Sunders abusers be held accountable for their actions against Sunder and the Courts order. We also ask that the ownership certificate be canceled as to ensure that Sunder goes to a proper Sanctuary and not one developed by his abusers. Thank you for your time on this matter. Respectfully, Your Name City, State, Country _____________________________ #6 ACTION: SEND SAMPLE LETTER [BELOW] TO RAHUL GANDHI Rahul Gandhi, the Vice President of the Indian National Congress party, is the second-ranked member of the Congress Working Committee. Vinay Kores party stands in opposition to the Congress party. (An interesting dynamic for advocacy based on tension) via FACEBOOK: https://facebook/pages/Rahul-Gandhi/27605962090 via EMAIL: [email protected] -- SAMPLE LETTER -- Dear Rahul Gandhi, Re: The Release of Abused Elephant Sunder We are writing to you on behalf of Sunder, the abused elephant who has experienced gross injustice; we seek your kind help in soliciting his freedom. We are a sizable group of advocates working with PETA India who have demanded Sunder’s release for two years without success. We approach you with hope that you will be able to assist us in securing Sunders freedom. We would like Sunder’s release to set the precedent for all temple elephants of India who are confined and lead a life contrary to what is natural to them - that these animals will one day be free to live the life that they are meant to. In the past, India has surpassed many other nations in animal welfare. This includes banning dolphin exhibits/aquariums and banning wildlife in circuses. These acts have not only shown the world that India exhibits tremendous compassion, but also that India will not tolerate attacks on the very philosophy that Gandhiji had envisioned about India, which is Ahimsa. Please visit the following link: bit.ly/1fXmwB1 Our main obstacle to Sunder’s freedom is Vinay Kore, who refuses to release Sunder under the High Courts order. Sunder’s case has been championed by many celebrities from different countries around the world: Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Madhuri Dixit, Amitabh Bachchan and Arjun Rampal. We would appreciate your quick response, as Sunder’s life remains in jeopardy due to deteriorating health caused by repeated beatings and starvation. Please help Sunder; let the world see that India will not tolerate attacks on it’s reputation. It was Gandhiji who also said “the greatness of a nation can be morally judged by the way its animals are treated.” Respectfully, Your Name, City, State, Country ______________________//______________________ BACKGROUND ON SUNDER: For over six years, 14-yr-old Sunder had been kept chained by temple authorities at the Jyotiba temple in Kolhapur, India. The elephant has scars covering his body, a severely injured eye that was likely caused by a beating and a hole in his ear that was caused by an ankus, an iron rod with a hook at the end. Forced into street begging for he temple, Sunder is chained in a filthy shack when not being used. In 2012, the Maharashtra Forest Department and Project Elephant gave orders to retire Sunder to a sanctuary. Instead, Maharashtra Member of Legislative Assembly, Vinay Kore -- who had given the elephant as a gift to the temple -- sent Sunder to be chained in an old, dark poultry shed in Warananagar, where this elephant is still currently (2014) kept. Upon inspection by two independent elephant experts -- authorized by the Animal Welfare Board of India who examined Sunder on Dec 20, 2013 -- it was found that Sunder is dehydrated and underweight. His body is heavily scarred and there is a hole in his ear through which his mahout controls him with a bull hook. The Ministry of Environment and Forest ordered Sunders relocation over a year ago [2012], until the order for him to be moved to a sanctuary had lapsed. The petition to relocate Sunder had been presented to the Bombay High Court, which ordered the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), to comply with the ministerial order previously passed. The PCCF was to submit a report to the court by December 23, 2013.
