A COMMUNITY judo club is celebrating after winning a haul of medals at a competition. Clifton Judo Academy, which has members aged from seven to 55, won 16 medals from the 16 fighters at the British Judo Councils National Championships in Norwich. The event features the best participants in the country, and saw a seven-year-old club fighter triumphant. Club leader George Bugg, said: We did exceptionally well, we had 16 fighters and we got eight golds, three silvers and five bronze medals. Everyone who fought got something. We did better than we did last year – it was fantastic. Seeing the young kids getting involved was great. Its fantastic for kids to get into – its one of the hardest martial arts and a real skill to learn. Its good for people in the area – weve got some good families who support us. Its very good for building confidence and learning discipline. Were starting to build up nicely but it would be good for people to sign up. The club has been running for 18 years and has 38 members. Mr Bugg has been running it from the start and says it is still going strong. Anthony Finchs granddaughter Lucy Finch, eight, won a bronze medal. Mr Finch, of Spryden Walk, said: Im very proud. She won a bronze. Its a great club and a wonderful thing for the kids. It gives them something to do. Lucy said: I won a bronze medal – I felt really chuffed. I like all the throws and fighting other people and I like the competition. I think its a fun sport. Keane Sharp, seven, was the youngest fighter and won a gold medal. He said: I was throwing people about and I got a gold medal. I was pleased. I like the different techniques. I would like to be a professional – Ill keep doing the competitions. And 14-year-old Nicole Brown has only been involved for a few months but won a silver medal. She said: I was very pleased – I didnt expect that. I like all of judo – Ive not been doing it very long but I want to carry on. Its an amazing club – George is the best. The club is recruiting members. The cost is £2.50 per lesson, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm on Sundays and 7.30pm to 8.30pm on Wednesdays. The club is based at Highbank Community Centre, off Farnborough Road.
