A COUPLE VERY IMPORTANT THINGS EVERY GUYANESE, GOSPEL ARTISTE SHOULD KNOW AND PRACTICE 1. As early as possible in your career, start to sing your own songs whenever you perform. Do not discard every other song but have something of your own. If you cannot write, ask or employ a writer. Of course your song won’t be as popular as if you sang a Mary Mary or Cherlyn Maloney song, but it will catch in time. Anytime someone hears “So Free”, they automatically think of Trenacia Esseboom because it’s her song and she doesnt mind singing it however many times she wishes. 2. Brand yourself. I’m not saying to go overboard and start doing ridiculous things like changing shirts on stage as part of your performance like Deitrick Haddon did at the National Park. The focus must always be Jesus, and in any case, people in this Guyanese culture would crucify anyone that makes a practice of that nonsense. But do and say things that spell “YOU”. It’s nice if you can do all of Mali Music’s riffs and runs but at the end of the day there can only be one Mali Music and you will only be a great copycat at best. Do things like making your own life and testimony a big part of what you do. 3. Always perform within the terms of agreement discussed before you take the stage. Never go over your allotted time, no matter how much the crowd loves your performance and no matter how much the “Spirit moves”. God is a God of order. Let the event organizer make the call on whether you should stay longer. Be considerate for other artistes coming after you, especially in Guyana’s culture of late starts and late ending of events. A lot of times, artistes at the bottom of the line-up feel the “time squeeze” because some other artiste earlier decided that “God wasnt done yet and they needed to complete the job.” 4. Never hold back from encouraging your fellow artistes. Make it a habit of letting them know when they do well and even if you see an area that they can improve in, tell them. Start a culture of appreciation. There is a very real principle in the Bible called Sowing and Reaping. What you do for others, God will make sure its done for you too. Talk half leff half... i think Ill write a book for real now lol. You can add your tips in the comments.
