A Canada Day weekend Bonus Butterfly! The local meadow has been essentially bereft of butterflies, with the exception of hordes of Silvery Blues and the beginning of hordes of European Skippers on the alfalfa. My nine-year old fellow butterfly enthusiast and I spent an hour there today, and in addition to the skipper and silvery blues came up with a grand total of 1 Common ringlet, 1 silver-spotted skipper, and Hobomock skipper and a worn Tiger swallowtail. Muy bleak! So I made a trip out to a little bog I know just south of Sherwood Park to see if things were any better out there. In the surrounding meadow there were a few Ringlets, lots of Silvery blues and a few Greenish blues, the latter somewhat flight-worn, and a single fresh Tawny-edged skipper. In the bog a single large fresh Speyeria did a fly-by, as large Speyeria are wont to do, species unknown. But what made the trip out all worthwhile were the Bog fritillaries (Boloria eunomia), fairly common , fresh and friendly, and thus was I able to obtain the attached images. And what a bonus surprise... who knew Bog fritillaries have big, blue eyes!!!
