A Child Is Born, A Son Is Given Isaiah 9:6 “ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. As we celebrate this time of year we must remember who it is all about. The Christmas season is all about Jesus. In this scripture we see that Isaiah talks about Jesus at two times in His life, His birth and His death. As we go into this teaching we will look at the child who was born and the Son who was given. For unto us a child is born… - The birth of Jesus was prophesied of several times in the Old Testament. Isaiah 7:14 tells us “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah tells us that God will give us a sign of the coming Messiah. This sign was the virgin birth of Jesus from a woman named Mary. At this time there had never been a virgin birth, there had been miraculous births by women who should not have been able to give birth because of their age. This name Immanuel is interpreted as God with us, which was who Jesus was. The birth of Jesus was to be different. The Bible tells us in Luke 1:30 - 31 “30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. Mary was favored by God. God had to find the right person at the right time to bring His Son into the world. Mary was chosen because she had a willing heart and she made herself available to be used of God. God used a virgin so that the child born to her would not have the Adamic or sinful nature that we all have. God caused the baby to be conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. Because of this Jesus was born sinless and holy because the nature of the conception was holy. He was conceived by the seed of God and not of man. This is why Jesus is referred to as the Son of God. ...unto us a son is given - This is how much God loved us as stated in John 3:16 - 17 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. There is no greater love that God can have for us then to give His only begotten Son to us so that we might live and have eternal life. …and his name shall be called Wonderful - The name Wonderful in this scripture comes from the Hebrew word pele (peh-leh) which means marvellous or wonderful thing. Jesus is marvelous and wonderful and His kingship is a marvelous thing as states in Psalms 118:22 - 24 “22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. 23 This is the LORDS doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. 24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” God sending His Son to the earth to show us how to live, having Him die on the cross for our sins and then making Him the Ruler over all things is marvelous and wonderful and is something we should praise Him for. …Counsellor – Jesus is our spiritual counselor and we should seek Him for the answers to all things. Isaiah 28:29 “This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.” And by His Spirit we can know all things as stated in 1 John 2:20 which says “But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.” The counsel or advice Jesus provides is wonderful because it comes from the One who knows the beginning and end of all things. Because Jesus is God, He is omniscient, which means to have infinite awareness, understanding and insight. …The mighty God – Jesus is the Almighty God as stated in John 1:1 - 2 “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God.” Jesus also stated His Deity in John 8:58 “Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” In these two scriptures we can see the deity of Jesus and He is the Almighty God. …The everlasting Father – Jesus was is and will always be. In John 10:30 Jesus tells us “I and my Father are one.” And again in Revelation 1:8 “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Jesus was in the beginning and will always be. …The Prince of Peace – The peace that we have is a peace that can only come from God through Jesus Christ. Colossians 1:20 - 21 “20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled.” In this scripture we can see that we have peace with Jesus Christ by the blood that He shed on the cross. The peace we have is the peace of mind in knowing that we have eternal life through Jesus Christ. In this teaching we see why we should celebrate this time of year, because it is all about Jesus! May the God of Peace and the peace and love of God be with you always!
