A Child Of Mine (Originally By Edgar Guest) Ill lend you, for a little time, A child of mine, God said. To love and care for while he lives, And mourn for when hes dead. It may be hours, days, or months, Or years it may be, But will you, till I call him back, Take care of him for me? Hell bring his charms to gladden you, And should his stay be brief, Youll have his sweet memory, As solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay, Since all from earth return. But there are lessons taught down there, That you all must learn. Ive looked the wide world over, In search for Mothers true. And from the throngs that crowd lifes lanes, I have selected you. Now will you give him all your love, Nor think the labor vain, Nor hate me when I come, To call him home again? I bow my head and say, Dear Lord, Thy will be done! For all the joy this child shall bring, The risk of grief Ill run. Ill shelter him with tenderness, Ill love him while I may, And for the happiness he brings, Forever grateful stay. But should the angels call for him, Much sooner than I planned. Ill brave the bitter grief that comes, And try to understand. (For my baby boy, Dustin. Ill always love you and miss you!!)
