A Christmas Letter Of Sorts, 2014. Before looking forward to - TopicsExpress

A Christmas Letter Of Sorts, 2014. Before looking forward to the New Year, here’s a little look back at the Christmas that just was, Chez Corbett. I didn’t manage to take many snaps or any good videos, but here’s a few from Derek’s stay with me over the Christmas holidays. It was good to have my friend here, sharing in the warmth of the home fires. There are a few people, whose own exquisite warmth and spirit (holiday and otherwise) and plain (and so gorgeous) practical help I want to give thanks for. They made the holidays go more smoothly and feel brighter than I might otherwise have achieved on my own. So first to my brother, Brian, who is a thoughtful, tender and generous fellow. (And a talented fellow, too. He made a violin for my bewitching niece, Raina, last Christmas, hewn of wood he’d gathered from places he knew would hold special meaning for her. It looks and sounds and is a thing of beauty.) And to my somewhat newly reacquainted but old friend, most generous friend David Harris from school days (the pre-university kind). Both of whom joined the ranks of the many generous lovelies who have donated to standwithderek.org. And whose personas as particularly large-hearted Christmas elves collectively made the tally leap up to nearly the $14,000 mark. Thanks Brian. Thank you, David. In this I should also like to thank the rest of my own family, for Brian didn’t only make a generous gift to Derek on his own behalf, but one for each one of us, thus displacing the books and music and, in theory at least, the ritualistic peanut brittle that would customarily have come your way. I’m too frequently otherwise dispatched, but Mom and Katie, my little sisters and brother (by which I mean my excellent nieces and nephew), I love you guys. I know you understand my latencies and absences, or will forgive me in any case. I also want to send big thanks to Carol, Barbara Jane and Graz. For the food, and the help, and the heart they variously dispensed. Merry Christmas. I felt it. In fact, with regard to Derek, who is separate from me but who nonetheless is forever a part of me in a tightly threaded friendship darned fixedly forward and backward through time, there are a great number of people I or we (myself, Derek, Geoff, independently, and as a team) want and mean to thank (if I haven’t already): friends and acquaintances, friends-of-friends, and flat-out strangers who’ve accessed a well of kindness in contributing to Derek’s continued recovery and spirit. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year, all. Shelagh
