A Close Encounter With Nature Keeping up with his promise, Ornithologist, Lester Fernando, who conducted a workshop last month, introducing the kids to bird life in Sri Lanka, accompanied a group of 25 MJF Kids on a field trip to Bodinagala, a tropical rainforest, 80 km away from Colombo. The Forest Reserve, surrounding an ancient Buddhist monastery is known to be one of the best bird watching locations in Sri Lanka. Surrounded by rubber and tree plantations, Bodhinagala is composed of slopes, forest paths and sparkling streams and is a popular area for hiking. Away from their usual environment, a refreshing change such as this, for the MJF Kids would no doubt instill an appreciation in nature. They were enthralled by their multisensory experience where they had the opportunity to close their eyes and listen to the sounds of nature, feel the icy cold water flow over their bare feet, smell the freshness of the air… They had so much to say about their eventful weekend.
