A Cluster Duck... not to be confused with a Charlie - TopicsExpress

A Cluster Duck... not to be confused with a Charlie Foxtrot. Its a well known fact, that this size of a mans deek set/spread is directly proportional to the size of his ego, AND his hunting fund. It helps determine his prowess and stature among his hunting buddies. However! It also can have unintended consequences with his wife and his current domestic situation. Purchasing, owning, borrowing, taking care of them for a buddy, are all great rational in the beginning... but eventually it no longer works. Frankly put... too many decoys can cause a hunter to experience deep freeze at home that make decoy hands seem like warm mittens. (Decoy Hands - adjective - The term used to describe the level of coldness in ones hands after picking-up, winding the tangled non-tangling cord, and bagging decoys in icy water. Nothing else can adequately explain how cold they feel. If you have ever picked up decoys in the dark, in the wind, in icy water... then you know.) Having just the right number decoys in your deek set/spread is a delicate balance struck between success in the field and success at home. SO what do you think of our decoy spread? (See Picture - not really decoys. ;-) ) We did hunt Farmington Bay this morning... early... really friggin early. Now I remember why I have not gone duck hunting in two years. Which was the last time Colby tricked me in to camoing-up and heading out to freeze my... self stiff in search of Green Heads, Pin Tails, Canvas Backs, Cotton Tops and Golden Eye. I have not been for two years, because it is - a lot of work, cold, wet, muddy, cold, mosquitos when its not cold, expensive, and cold. But damn its fun! Truthfully, I can say, it is still worth it, putting forth the effort to show up and have the experience... whatever it may be. I admit, it sucked today, that my Son could not be here, but he was hunting in Corvallis Oregon (and in my heart), while Darin and I hunted Farmington Bay. Colby, of course got a big goose... In Utah we a big goose egg. The most important thing to remember is.... regardless of the temperature, the number of ducks seen or called-in to range, no matter whatever effort it takes to roll out of the warm sack at O-dark-thirty, to load the dog and the last of the gear, and then GO... it is almost always worth-it. Show-up and be present in the adventure you go on. Whatever it is. I went to Antelope Island later today. After not getting any shots with my gun, I wanted to try with the camera. This cluster of ducks offered a long range shot. I will get a better/longer lens one day, in the meantime, its still fun to see them. I actually have more to say... but I will switch to my journal, because I have rambled on too long already. Thanks for your time. ;-)
