A Commentarial Response to ‘ The Secret Behind the Silicon Valley Elite’s Success: Meditation The postcast of the influence of meditation of the entrepreneurial culture among the elite workers in Silicon Valley captivated my attention. The Silicon Valley of USA employs some of the brightest and best brains from all over the world to work for them. Even the brightest and best brains of the Silicon Valley’s employers and employees require meditation to move up and get ahead. Owing to the influence of Buddhism in the West in the past three decades, the Western entrepreneurs and their co-workers have organized meditation instruction and practice classes to look inside their minds of leadership quality of their elite managers and co-workers. Consequently, mindfulness meditation movement has emerged as a vital part of the Western entrepreneurial culture to improve total quality management TQM) of the brains of the employers and employees. When human TQM of the brain is raised, it follows that the TQM of human capacity and productivity are also proportionally elevated. Acquiring the competitive edge is the survival skill of every successful company. In what ways has the mindfulness meditation contributed to the competitive edge of the transnational companies in the Silicon Valley of USA ? In order to answer this vital question, one must understand the primal function or purpose of mindfulness meditation modelled primarily from Buddhist meditation praxis . The purpose of Buddhist meditation is to transform the head mind (ordinary consciousness) into the Heart Mind (insightful wisdom) . The head mind is the mind of logical analysis. The Heart Mind is the mind of paradoxical synthesis. Logical analysis is human intellect supported by ordinary consciousness. Paradoxical synthesis is intuitive insight supported by wisdom. Consciousness is movement ; wisdom is Rest. Human activities involve countless movement of notions. Notions are conceptually driven by inner thoughts and feelings . When the movement of thoughts and feelings are recognized through mindfulness awareness, non-reactive detachment from all mental objects aroused by both internal and external stimuli is arisen to purify the mind . The arisen detachment is non-egoistic clinging of proactive equanimity. Proactive equanimity is the key tool of mindfulness meditation to calm and still the mind. Perfect equanimity enables a mindfulness meditating worker to tame and appease his or her noisy mind . Mindfulness meditation evokes right brain operation to arise to co-exist with the left brain in order to tame the left brain operating the movement of the mind in secular activities . Basically left brain function is the movement while the right brain function is Rest. Secular mind and spiritual mind are inseparable for optimal productivity and lasting satisfaction. Without mindfulness meditative tool of Rest, the movement of the mind is untamed. Untamed mind easily arouses emotional and mental problems. However, when the primordial Rest is arisen from detached mindfulness meditation, the Rest tool is arisen to monitor , discipline and even appease the movement if mindfulness has evolved into insight. Every human being requires both movement of the mind and the Rest of the mind so that the human mind functions optimally through the unity of left brain and right brain. Monitored movement plus Rest is authentic mindfulness meditation. Basically, the movement is human mental activities; the Rest is primordial wisdom. From the Buddhist perspective, the movement is activity of self; the rest is wisdom of Non-self. In other words, the movement is the created phenomenon ; the Rest is the uncreated Absolute. The former is finite; the latter is infinite. Generally, a non-meditating worker utilizes only the mind of movement (head mind) and neglects the utility of Rest Mind (Heart Mind). This explains why a non-meditative worker is easily inflicted by emotional and mental problems due to the continuous stress and strain of pressures of work life, family life and social life. The high-tech companies in the Silicon Valley of the United Sates are wise to employ mindfulness mediation derived from Buddhist meditation praxis to improve brain function, mental health , emotional health, memory, stress reduction . In addition, it upgrades human memory, and entreprenuerial management . Mindfulness meditation improves TQM of the mind. TQM of the mind improves TQM of the human body. When the TQM of the body and the mind are raised, the TQM of the human character and company management are assured by the Buddha-nature in us. Mindfulness meditation is the best tool for a company’s TQM.
