A Covenant Relationship “The Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt treacherously; yet she is your companion and your wife by covenant. But did He not make them one, having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.” – Malachi 2:14-15 . How does God view His relationship with us? We get real insight when we think about the feasts He established (Leviticus 23:2). These were very special to God, not as rituals but as ways to confirm, affirm, and celebrate His personal relationship with His people. One of the very special days on God’s calendar is Yom Kippur, the “Day of Atonement,” which began yesterday at sundown. One of the holiest days of the year, this day was ordained by God just after the children of Israel left Egypt. One of the reasons why Yom Kippur is so special is because of the covenant relationship God has with His people. This relationship is to be like the very best marriage. It is a relationship with His people as a whole, but also with each one of us personally. In God’s sight, a marriage is not just a relationship of convenience or pleasure. People in the world often treat marriage vows as casual promises that can be easily forgotten. In contrast with the loose marriage commitments many people have in the world, God wants a wife and husband to have a firm covenant relationship, bound together before Him. As He described to Malachi, God made husbands and wives to be “one,” experiencing a true spiritual unity. This picture of an ideal marriage is important, because it represents the kind of relationship God wants to have with each of us. Today, remember that God wants you to have a covenant relationship with Him. Purge your life of sin and anything that displeases Him. And seek to develop a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him. . Prayer Father, I want to know You more deeply than ever before. Give me ears to hear You when You speak to me. Help me to be in harmony with You. Forgive my sins. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Rev Joseph and Pastor Christine Simiyu. From Kenya.
