A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES real-time reading, 30 September (Chapter 11): When Matthew came into the Selden End, without warning or sound, no icy patches announced his arrival. Instead there were touches of snowflakes all along my hair, shoulders, and back, as if he were checking quickly to make sure I was all in one piece. My fingers gripped the table in front of me. For a few moments, I didnt dare turn in case it was simply Miriam. When I saw it was indeed Matthew, my heart gave a single loud thump. Chapter 11 was one of *those* chapters--a moment in the arc of a books story line, in the plot of the trilogy, even--where a lot of emotional buildup from previous chapters reaches a crescendo, and the next stage in the characters emotional development begins. Chapter 11, as a result, has a lot of songs associated with it in my mind. Thats because music helps me flesh out emotion. It also helps me keep it consistent over the course of several days as I write (most of my chapters take about one week to write), then many more months of revision. These lines were linked very firmly in my mind with Thea Gilmores OLD SOUL. Diana is beginning to accept that she needs an old soul in her life--someone who wont be afraid of who she really is but will look her in the eye and accept her. And when this particular old soul, Matthew Clairmont, enters the library after so many days away, Dianas heart knows she has found her old soul, even if the rest of her is still not sure.
