A DOG walker and her pet were stung repeatedly by wasps and ended up in a river after a leisurely afternoon stroll turned sour. The 43-year-old woman was walking along the banks of the River Tees at Upper Rockliffe, near Hurworth, on Saturday afternoon when she disturbed a wasps’ nest. She was stung numerous times to the head, arms and legs while her dog was also stung. The dog jumped into the river to escape the wasps and was followed by the woman who went in to retrieve her pet. A friend, who was accompanying the woman, called 999, but by the time the emergency services arrived the victim had managed to haul herself and the dog back onto the riverbank. John Stephenson, a watch manager with Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue service, said the woman was given pain relief by paramedics and taken to hospital for a precautionary check up. Mr Stephenson said firefighters taped off the area where the wasps were disturbed and informed the pest control unit at Darlington Borough Council.
