A DREAM REALIZED AFTER FOUR ATTEMPTS Via Kashmir Administrative Service - KAS TAJAMUL YOUSUF KAS 2014 He failed four times in his endeavor but did not lose heart and finally made it to the Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS), results for which were declared last Month Hailing from Gogo, a neighborhood in the north-east of the Srinagar Airport, Tajamul Yousuf cracked the KAS exam in his fifth attempt. “I was definitely disappointed after I couldn’t qualify in the four previous consecutive terms but I decided to try again. Due to my steadfastness and persistent support of the family, I finally made it to the KAS. Praise be to Allah who gave me the courage to fight,” says Yousuf. Yousuf falls at number 29 in the select list. “I was not sure that I will qualify it,” he says with a smile. “Hard-work and determination kept me going despite all odds,” he added., Yousuf who secured 1340 marks says that he was stunned to hear that he had qualified the exams. “Ultimately it is the hard-work that pays.” Far away from his own subject, he chose Public Administration and Anthropology as optional. Earlier his optionals were Political Science and Law. “My next target is to qualify the IAS,” he says. Yousuf has received his schooling from Kendra Vidhyalaya-2, Air Force Station Srinagar and did his higher studies from Kashmir University. He has also cracked NET.For the first time he appeared in KAS in 2009 but could only make it to the interview. In second attempt in 2010, he did not even make it to the mains.“Both these failures pained me. Then I thought of giving it up. But my parents motivated me and appreciated my honest efforts,” Yousuf said. Qualifying civil services was in my mid since the period I was pursuing law in the university, he said. Son of a clerk in the State’s Power Development Department, he says that Dr. Shah Faisal (a boy from Kupwara who topped the IAS some years ago) was his inspiration like many other civil service aspirants in J&K. “I have interacted with Faisal many a times, attended his counseling classes and lectures. His guidance has been very significant and it helped me a lot to perform well both in mains and the interview.” After completing his degree in 2013, Yousuf worked as lecturer in Kashmir Law College and subsequently he got selected as relationship executive in J&K Bank. Yousuf said, “It was very challenging to manage KAS preparation while doing bank job wherein I had to attend the duties even on Sundays. I preferred civil service for it provides immense respect and much bigger a platform to serve my people.” Yousuf believes the secret behind his success was a disciplined and well-planned study. For study, Yousuf says, many people read varied books on a single topic. But he instead focused on one. “My teacher advised me to stick only to NCERT books.” For aspirants, who are Preparing For KAS this year, he suggests, “Do not read only, but understand the topics and concepts.” Having knowledge about current affairs, events, and international issues and their impact on India plays a vital role in qualifying such exams, he says. It is noteworthy that the J&K General Administration Department had referred 99 vacancies in the gazetted services to the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) last year. Preliminary examination was conducted in September 2013 in which 25,006 candidates appeared and 2477 qualified for the mains; 340 candidates qualified for the interview and Commission recommended 99 among them for appointment.
