A Decade of Hegemony of the Triumvirate Ends?? The last time a mens Grand Slam Final was contested without the scoreboard showing Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic was at the Oz open in 2005 (Hewitt vs. Safin). Andre Agassi was still ranked in the top 10! It all came to an end on a shocking Saturday that turned the tennis world upside down. With the tennis world still reeling from Djokovics loss to Kie Nishikori, Marin Cilic completed a surprisingly comprehensive victory over Federer to send the media world in a frenzy & the experts scrambling to give explanations for what transpired! Simply put, Cilic was in what they call the zone and its doubtful if anybody would have been able to hang with him in those 1 hr 45 mins of one of the cleanest hitting seen in a while. A very few of the other instances of similar impacts that come to mind (with all due respect to Sampras fans!): 1. Philippoussis def. Sampras (Oz open 3rd rd, 1996) 2. Safin def. Sampras (US Open Final, 2000) 3. Hewitt def. Sampras (US Open Final, 2001) 4. Tsonga def. Nadal (Oz open Semis, 2008) 5. Del Potro def. Nadal (US Open Semis, 2009. Although Nadal was injured) As Federer put it in a single sentence, Its fairly simple: I think Marin played great, Lets hope that these two (Cilic & Nishikori) of the new generation can conjure another of their performances, that they have done through this tournament, when they square up against each other on Monday to decide a new 1st time Grand Slam Champion! youtube/watch?v=fkAVCavQa6Q
