Chicago, IL: Moody Publishers. ________________ Following Where He Leads He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.—Psalm 23:3 I’LL NEVER FORGET THE TIME I WAS FIRST CHALLENGED to consider starting a daily teaching program on the radio. From the outset, I had grave reservations about such an undertaking and was quick to list them to the Lord and others. I knew virtually nothing about broadcasting and felt utterly inadequate and incapable of taking on such a responsibility. Beyond those practical concerns, I was in my early forties and was wishing for a more settled life than I had experienced over more than twenty years of itinerant ministry. In my mind, accepting this challenge would mean working harder than ever and relinquishing any thought of anonymity, privacy, or a “normal” life—things I selfishly wished to enjoy. I remember thinking, This would mean having no life of my own! Even as a little girl, I had recognized God’s ownership of my life. I had long acknowledged that I was not my own; in essence, I had signed a blank contract, giving my life wholly to God to be used for His purposes. Yet now that He was filling in some of the details, I was trying to protect and preserve part of it for myself. Finally, stepping out in faith and surrender, I said, “Yes, Lord. I am Your servant. You know my weaknesses, my fears, and my personal desires. But I will gladly embrace whatever You reveal to be Your will in this matter.” I’d be less than truthful if I said the journey since then has been easy; but His presence and grace have been with me each step of the way, and I have never regretted following Him on this path. God’s call in your life will probably look different than it does in mine—or in anyone else’s. Regardless of the details, He asks simply that we bow the knee and say, Yes, Lord. That is the only path to joy and blessing. Why do feelings of fear and inadequacy provide such a poor guidance system for our lives? Where is He leading you that requires faith and surrender?
