A Devotional for such a time as this: - from: Wilberforce, W., & Belmonte, K. (2006). 365 Days with Wilberforce (p. 110). Leominster, UK: Day One Publications. _______________________________ ‘The reality of meekness and gentleness’ ‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.’ Galatians 5:22–23 SUGGESTED FURTHER READING: Romans 12:3 Christianity teaches us not to prize human estimation at a very high rate, and thereby provides for the practice of her injunction, to love from the heart those who, justly or unjustly, may have attacked our reputation, and wounded our character. She commands not the show but the reality of meekness and gentleness; and by thus taking away the aliment of anger and the fomenters of discord, she provides for the maintenance of peace, and the restoration of good temper among men, when it may have sustained a temporary interruption. FOR MEDITATION: In 1 Thessalonians 2:7, the apostle Paul tells the Thessalonians: ‘But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children.’ If such was the way in which the apostles treated fellow believers, how ought we to treat one another? Consider these passages of Scripture. In 2 Corinthians 10:1 Paul writes of ‘the meekness and gentleness of Christ’. In 2 Timothy 2:24–25 the apostle admonishes his young protégé Timothy: ‘And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.’ In Galatians 5:22–23 Paul teaches that the fruits of the Spirit in our lives are to be: ‘love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness [and] temperance.’ Lastly, the apostle James urges his readers to remember that ‘the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy’ (James 3:17). May God grant us the grace, the conviction and the resolve to live our lives as these passages dictate.
