A Different Kind of National Shenandoah National Park is a great place to be -- to hike, to camp, to drive, to look at the stars -- to unwind. Ditto for George Washington - Jefferson National Forest. GW-Jeff, as the closet U.S. National Forest Service is known, offers terrific opportunities for recreation, too, some of which are not offered in Shenandoah. You can ride your mountain bike on some GW-Jeff trails. You can ride your ATV on some trails in the GW-Jeff, too. The rules for primitive camping in the National Forest are less restrictive than they are in the National Parks. (But be sure you know what they are, and that you abide by them.) Visit the GW-Jeff website for more information: fs.usda.gov/main/gwj/home The National Forests are administered and managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture; National Parks come under the U.S. Department of Interior. But BOTH GW-Jeff and SNP are excellent places to play, recharge, and relax.
