A FB friend posted an article from a site called Addicting Info today. It was about how the US is now #1 and how we have outdone the Old Soviet Union For Largest Prison System In History. It goes on to say The Soviet Gulag was, above all else, designed for what the Soviet’s called vospitaniye or perevospitaniye, re-education. The goal was to prevent the recurrence of crime, and for the most part, it was successful. During a prisoners long labor, they were also educated – not just in vocational activities but also in cultural. The Gulags were a center of expanding the arts, particularly music, in the Soviet Union. It would be inconceivable here in the United States to imagine whole orchestras of prisoners – but we have no issue with prisoners stitching together women’s lingerie. On behalf of the real facts and my Polish customer whose story I remember in detail, I need to protest this outright falsehood. She, 16 at the time, along with her 5 siblings and a mom and 1.5 million Poles were removed from their home in Poland for no good reason other than the Soviets wanted to move in Russians to expand their sphere of influence. The father was made to stay as he was the engineer at the local electric plant. She never saw him or her town again. They were shipped on cattle cars to Siberia where they were forced to do manual labor. She said she got a piece of bread every time she cut down a tree. She spent 2 years there, was always hungry. At that point the US made some sort of deal with Stalin to allow them to leave as their labor was needed in the war effort. She ended up in Israel where she received military training, then to England later to the US. She wrote a book in Polish about her experiences.
