A FIREPLACE KIND OF DAY...It was a raw day as I began chores this morning. Marie was already at the stable when I came in. She had done the grain and water. So rather than give the hay right away, we went straight to deworming. An hour later the job was completed with much help from my handy dandy little gismo. There were only a few horses that were somewhat easy to do. Most of them were ticked that the hay trolley wasnt rolling down the aisle. I swear they could smell the dewormer coming and hid themselves away, avoiding being haltered. It is amazing how these horses turn into giraffes when the syringe is exposed to their line of sight. It must taste terrible despite the claims it is apple flavoured. Its a poison and I think they know it. Really, if you were a horse, would you want to swallow poison? Twenty-five horses later, we were done. The horses were glad to see the hay finally arrive. They munched away while Marie and I started mucking with horses still in their stalls. By noon we were able to turn out the herds and then off we went to lunch at the Black Dog Bar and Grill. After satisfying our hunger, it was a short stretch to finish the stalls. As we got down to the last two, Jennifer and Tony arrived to help with afternoon feed. It was a quick job with all the hands on deck including Jo-Anne who arrived at 3 pm. Finishing early, I decided to put up a few lights to add a bit of festive touch to the stable. Afterwards I gave Marie a tour of the new grave markers as we strolled along the drive stopping and reflecting on each nameplate. Looking to the south, a beautiful red fox trotted along the fence line with his bushy tail held firmly in a straight line. I called out to the crafty fellow. He stopped momentarily. His ears pricked forward as he stared at me in the distance. Then as quickly as he came, he vanished into the brush. Shivering from the sharp wind I turned and retreated to Bubbles (my van). Marie stepped in and off we pointed Bubbles towards the route to Maries house. Ill be back at the stable tonight after roasting my legs by the fireplace for a couple of hours. Im trying to thaw the ache out of my bones before I feel that blast of cold again.
