A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday adjourned to March 21 a suit filed by the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, seeking an order restraining the police, the State Security Services and other law enforcement agencies of government from arresting him. Justice Ibrahim Buba adjourned the matter after the defendants in the suit sought more time to file their responses. The defendants in the suit are the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, the SSS and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke. The court had on February 21 granted Sanusi’s ex parte application temporarily restraining the security agencies from arresting him pending the hearing of the suit. The court had subsequently ordered that the suit be converted to a motion on notice and served on the defendants. Sanusi had filed the suit through his counsel, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo (SAN) and Mr. Kola Awodein (SAN). On Friday, counsel for the AGF, Dr. Oscar Nliam, holding the brief of Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and Dr. Fabian Ajogwu (SAN), said they had just been briefed and had yet to receive all the processes filed by the applicant. Nliam, therefore, prayed the court for a short adjournment to enable them to respond, as they were still within time. Counsel for the police, Mr. Chukwu Agwu, also said he was only notified on Thursday night by the force headquaters, Abuja, that the suit would come up. He too sought an adjournment to enable him to file his defence. Counsel for the SSS, Mr. Ahmed Musa, added that an adjournment would be in their favour especially as parties were still within time. Awodein did not object to the applications for adjournment, but noted that the suit had to do with rights enforcement, and ought to be dealt with expeditiously.
