A Few Thoughts on Spaceape: I found out that Stephens treatment had become palliative at some point this summer. It seemed strange, because all of the reports on his health over the last few years had seemed so hopeful. I never knew Stephen all that well, he was to me, the best friend and musical partner of one of my closest friends Steve Goodman/Kode 9. The various times I met him over the years, I always found him to be the nicest, warmest and cheeriest of people. I was genuinely touched when he turned a junior boys lyric into his own on their track Stalker. But it is not as a friend, but rather as a fan of his that I prefer to comment on his passing. I am genuinely struggling to think of any musician who has confronted disease and mortality like Spaceape has. It is impossible to listen to the tracks from the soon to be released Killing Season EP, and older tracks like On The Run and The Cure without marvelling at a man who had such presence of mind and also such dedication to art and its communicative power. Edgar Allan Poe wrote that If you are ever drowned or hung, be sure and make note of your sensations. Most of us dont have the fortitude, creativity or desire to confront that most frightening aspect of our life with such honesty and raw intensity. Luckily, for us, we had Spaceape.
