A Fun Father’s Day Weekend By James E. Boyd Our wonderful family lives in Dacula, Ga. in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia and about forty-five minutes from downtown Atlanta if the traffic is cooperative. We get together and have fun every opportunity. Our excitement about the Father’s Day weekend visit of our son Richard and our two lovely granddaughters Whitney and Caroline had intensified over several weeks preceding their arrival. The sad thing about it all, though, was that granddaughter Terah, Daughter-in-law Tammy and grandson Dustin would not be coming due to work and school schedules. Friday marked two special events: the arrival of our family for a long Father’s Day weekend and B. J. was finishing her summer school commitment and would be foot-loose and fancy-free for the rest of the summer. My thrill meter accelerated when Caroline texted me that they were leaving Dacula on their way to St. Simons. She didn’t say which route they would be taking. Richard, having lived in and around Atlanta for nearly thirty years, knows the back streets and short cuts like the back of his hand. Anyway, they were on their way to our house. We anxiously waited. The time passed and then my thrill meter jumped again when Caroline texted me and told me that they were accessing I-95 in Savannah. Considering my son’s driving habits, I figured they would be here in an hour or less. Surely enough, hardly an hour had passed when Richard’s shiny new king size Chevy Silverado pulled into our driveway. The gleeful group bounded out to meet their joyful papa. Mushy hugs and kisses became the order of the moment. Sammie, their feisty rat terrier, was beside himself. He knows me well and he knew that I was gonna slip him some tasty goodies from the table when Richard wasn’t looking. Shortly, B. J. arrived from work and it was more squishy hugs and kisses. A fishing trip was in the works for their visit. Richard knows that I have probably the best-equipped tackle box on St. Simons so after a little while of chit chat and getting their gear into their rooms, Richard and Whitney set to rigging for fishing and crabbing the next day. Caroline, a pizza lover supreme, plundered our freezers in search of her favorite pizza. She found it. The entrée for supper was a whopping big pot of flavorous oyster stew. We had ordered our oysters earlier in the week to be fresh and ready by 9:00am Friday. No one stews up oysters better than B. J. does. She had the oysters and the other ingredients ready. Yum Yum. The stew was ever so fundelicious. My and Richard’s Father’s Day weekend was shaping up to be big fun. After supper, we kicked back and set up late cutting up, carrying on, laughing, and talking. We have great fun when we get together. Finally, fagged out, we hit the sack for some snoozing. A luscious breakfast of grits and eggs and sausage and B. J.’s tasty and fluffy homemade biscuits spiced with some humor from the kids was so enjoyable on our patio. I cooked the sausage and eggs on my patio stove. I had been itching for a chance to use it. After the hearty breakfast, Richard and the girls finished organizing for a day of fishing. They got their act together and headed for the pier. B. J. and I would remove Big Red’s toupee and follow later. There was exuberance and fishing fever at the pier. Fishing lines and crab baskets were baited and cast into the water. The catch would be yellow tails, stone crabs and croakers. Time passed and we got hungry so we treated ourselves to some Zuzu hot dogs for snacks. A low country boil was in the works for later in the day so we didn’t want to totally wipe out our appetites. When the kids tired of fishing, we happily strolled around the neighborhood taking pictures and just enjoying ourselves. Later, we gathered back at our house for a scrumptious Low Country Boil served on our patio. However, the climax of the fishing excitement would come later in the day when Richard and the girls got into some sharks in the Back River. Boy howdy, although the sharks were small, the kids really enjoyed pulling them out. The really high point of my family’s visit, though, was when I was treated to prime rib on Father’s Day at Logan’s Roadhouse. We had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend with our amazing family.
